Cross-disciplinary Research of MPAT

Part 1 ■Next-Generation Technology for Ocean Resources Exploration

Last Updated on March 11th, 2020

For the promotion of marine resources development industry, it is one of the key actions to narrow the range of highly potent sites of subsea mineral deposit in the vast ocean. Unlike land area, however, in the majority of subsea area even the very basic prerequisite information such as detailed bottom bathymetry essential for such key actions are unavailable. As a social need, the research and development of low-cost practical methodology for subsea area survey followed by actual on-site applications is strongly required.
Under this background, in the R&D project titled "Next-Generation Technology for Ocean Resources Exploration", we have conducted research and development of multiple AUV operation technologies which realizes the simultaneous operation of multiple AUVs leading to the wide-area survey by utilizing many kinds of observatory equipment. At the same time, we also have conducted research and development of underwater acoustic video camera that enables simultaneous acquisition of 3-D bottom bathymetry as well as acoustic image even in turbid water, which is hardly possible by an optically-based survey device.
